Our trip to SF is nearly over (currently packing). It was brilliant. Lots of great idea and inspirations and i must say that the finish was amazing. Yesterday, we’ve went (Sylvain and I) to a party mixing CC and Wikipedia. During the event Jimmy Wales announced that Wikipedia would mouve its licences to CC. Here is the epxlanation :
- Wikipedia is most read for non encyclopedian work : Entertainment. - Wikipedia as the rest of the web is driving growth also based on sex - Search Engine are the key to Wikipedia growth (if you are interested on that part, the why, you should have a look at this other academic work).
A must read for people trying to get on the wikipedia tracks.
Jason Calacanis has realased his last podcast : Calacanis Beta 11 it’s a must listen.
Control by Obscurification: The New Radical Opaqueness Is Wikipedia really open? Why is digg moving away from transparency? In this podcast I look at the challenges two of the most important sites on the Internet are facing.
I’ve taken part in the discussion about the monetisation of wikipedia. This podcast is brilliant and Jason is perfectly right ! I am not going to sum up the podcast because if you’re not already a listener you should become one after that (godady/godady/godady ;-))
Free Speech for the internet …. and the Internet of Free Speech ! A clear HALL OF FAME
“To examine this idea in a more controlled setting, Vohs, now at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and colleagues recruited several hundred college students to participate in a variety of experiments. In each experiment, the researchers subtly prompted half the volunteers to think of money—by having them read an essay that mentioned money, for example, or seating them facing a poster depicting different types of currency—before putting them in a social situation. In one experiment, the researchers gave volunteers a difficult puzzle and told them to ask for help at any time. People who had been reminded of money waited nearly 70% longer to seek help than those who hadn’t. People cued to think of money also spent only half as much time, on average, assisting another person who asked for their help with a word problem and picked up fewer pencils for someone who”d dropped them.”
He uses these fndings to talk about evangelism… very interesting
We came trough the discussion @ rough type to the hypothesis that an API could be monetized in BtoB. I love this hypothesis. In the new dev version of U-lik we choose to create a direct link so people will be pushed to contribute. By default, we will bring value by driving our power users.
The discussion was also on Wikipedia having dam good results on Google. Rough Type found some clues which match with Greg linden comment.
I’ve spent a lot of time working on and for wikipedia. We’ve worked with el rude on the hypotitical valuation of Wikipedia for several reasons:
It’s fun
It’s interesting (I’ll come back to that point)
It’s worth something when talking to VCs.
We came with a number that was quite astonishing, simply because we went further than a simple "ads valuation" (Google also bought power user and maybe star/ecosystem worker). I will not disclosed that number because we’ve done it for fun and because I love Wikipedia.
But I came accross a very interesting post from aVC (as always) starting with this question Why ads are so hated ? His point of view is that Ads are Usefull…. and ads are content when relevant. He is right, in a capitalist economy ads are content (look at the number of ads on youtube =46k ) and they are usefull because they are answers to problems and needs.
But that’s in a capitalistic environnment even if you intend to give the money to Charity as AVc does with is blog (30k$/year) and was hoping for Wikipedia to !
"I just don’t get that. Ads are content just like everything else. Good
ones that are relevant (and wikipedia being a search/keyword driven
site could target the ads so easily) and attractive are additive in my
opinion. But clearly not everyone feels that way."
